The Second Pillar of Islam: Understanding Islamic Prayer and Its Importance

Salah, prayer, is the second pillar. The Islamic faith is based on the belief that individuals have a direct relationship with God. Salah can he performed alone; it is meritorious to perform it with another or with a group. It is permissible to pray at home, at work, or even outdoors; however it is recommended that Muslims perform salah in a mosque.

1). Allah (SWT) says in the Quran

a). Ibraheem (AS) asks Allah’s support in his duty saying:

رَ ب اجْعَلْنِِ مُقِيمَ ال ه صلاةِ وَمِنْ ذُ رِيهتِ ابراهيم: 40 ) )

Meaning in English:

Oh my lord, make me one who establishes Salaah (prayer) and also from my offspring)

[Surah Ibraheem (14):40]

b). Allah (SWT) spoke to Musa (AS) saying:

وَأَقِمِ ال ه صلاةَ لِذِكْرِي

( طه: 14 )

Meaning in English:

And establish Salaah for my remembrance

[Surah Taaha (20):14]

c). Issa (AS) says of Allah (SWT):

وَأَوْصَانِِ بِال ه صلاةِ وَالهزكَاةِ مَا دُمْتُ حَي اً ( مريم: 31 )

Meaning in English:

And he has enjoined on me salaah and Zakaah as long as I live

[Surah Mariyam (19):31]

d). Allah (SWT) orders Mohammed (SAW) saying:

اتْلُ مَا أُوحِيَ إِلَيْكَ مِنَ الْكِتَابِ وَأَقِمِ ال ه صلاة

( العنكبوت: 45 )

Meaning in English:

Recite what was revealed to you of the book and establish Salaah

[Surah Al-‘Ankaboot (29):45]

e). Allah (SWT) orders the believers saying:

إِ ه ن ال ه صلاةَ كَانَتْ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِيَ كِتابًا مَوْقُوتً ( النساء: 103 )

Meaning in English:

Establish Salaah, for salaah has been enjoined on the believers at stated times

[Surah An-Nisaa(4):103]

May Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) accept all our good deeds and help us in the cause, forgive our mistakes and make us amongst the Muntaqeen & By His Mercy make us all Inhabitants of Jannah. Ameen ya rabbal’alameen.
